BENTON, Kan. (KSNW) – No injuries were reported after a plane’s landing gear struck a car and caused it to flip in Benton on Sunday evening. The crash happened just after 5 p.m. at Stearman Field Bar & Grill.
The Kansas Highway Patrol said a Toyota driven by 71-year-old Rebeca Rodriguez of Benton was eastbound on Southwest 30th Street, and a 1943 Boeing E75 Stearman was on a short approach to the south-facing runway. The aircraft’s gear struck the car, causing it to impact the ground and flip over onto its top wing.
“As I was driving, I felt an impact. I heard an impact first,” Rodriguez said. “Then, I turn, and I saw the airplane and then the glass from the window. It just burst all over.”
Rodriguez wasn’t seriously injured but did receive a few scratches on her hands
The pilot, 68-year-old Ryan Stewart, and his passenger, 73-year-old Gregory Largen, both from Benton, weren’t injured.
Rodriguez’s car is totaled.
